Moving
Tips
Moving can be a strenuous proposition to say the least.
We all know how to pack and move from one location to
another, but following a few simple guidelines will
make it a much smoother process.
THE
RIGHT PACKING MATERIALS
While free boxes from your local supermarket may be tempting,
they are not as strong as proper cartons from a moving company
so be careful.
FRAGILE
OBJECTS
Use sheets, blankets, towels, pillows, etc. to separate fragile
items such as mirrors and paintings. Pack plates and glass
objects vertically rather than stacking them on top of one
another.
DO
NOT PACK BOXES SO THAT THEY
BECOME DANGEROUS TO LIFT!
If an item is heavy, pack it in its own box. Don't risk a
back injury by trying to cram too much into one carton. Label
all your boxes so that you can easily find the things you
need first when you move into your new home. You might want
to lighten your total load by hosting a garage sale before
you move!
GET
USED TO YOUR NEW ADDRESS
Make sure the whole family is familiar with your new address.
Encourage your children to help label cartons with the new
address to help familiarize them with the new address.
PACK
"OPEN FIRST" CARTONS
Pack essentials such as snacks, coffee, mugs, soap and toiletries,
flashlight and a toolkit and any other items you may need
when you first move in. Take these items with you rather than
have them shipped by your moving company, just in case your
mover is delayed in any way. You will probably want to include
your Address Book in this "Care Package" so you
won't be out of touch for any period of time!
WORK
CLOSELY WITH YOUR MOVER
If you are familiar with how your belongings are packed, you
will be better able to unpack and store things in the correct
places. Keep pets out of the way so they don't accidentally
get included in a package! Keep copies of the inventory form,
Bill of Lading and shipment registration close at hand. If
you goods will require temporary storage by the mover, check
that the storage facility is clean and secure.
